Why it works

  1. You wake up low: overnight your liver glycogen runs down. Even a small carb breakfast tops the liver back up before you train.
  2. Carbs are your fastest fuel: the harder you go, the more your body leans on carbs over fat, so a topped-up tank protects your pace.
  3. Steady blood sugar: carbs before training keep your blood glucose stable, avoiding the early dizziness and flatness of starting empty.
  4. Delay fatigue: fuller glycogen stores let you hold your effort deeper into the session.
  5. A sharper head: glucose is the brain's main fuel, so eating before you train protects your focus and pacing.

Definitions

  • Glycogen: the stored form of carbs in your liver and muscles. Overnight it's mainly the liver store that runs down, which is why breakfast matters.
  • Glucose: a simple sugar, also called blood sugar, that your body and brain use as quick fuel.
  • Blood glucose: the sugar in your bloodstream, the central fuel. A dip leaves you flat and shaky.
